Airports

As millions of people pass through airports each day, airports have become a logical target for terrorists. And while airside security has increase significantly in the wake of attacks, landside security has lagged behind—despite recent attacks at airports in Brussels and Istanbul. People can usually enter airports without encountering much in the way of security measures.

Problem

At entrances to airport terminals, using traditional checkpoint security processes that scan one individual at a time, is often impractical, inconvenient, unreliable, and expensive to operate. In addition it can cause secondary vulnerabilities by creating lines outside the entrance. As a result, security at terminal entrances was limited or non-existent, and time and time again has failed to act as a deterrent for terrorists.

Solution

Apstec®’s Human Security Radar® (HSR™) delivers the capability to screen people for explosive threats and automatic firearms. HSR™ offers the opportunity for Airports to significantly mitigate the risk of terrorism in landside arrivals and departures. HSR™ does this by screening people for threat items at the entry into the terminal. HSR™ can enhance Airport security and at the same time have a positive effect on airport operations and the entire passenger experience.

HSR™ screens people entering landside public spaces for explosive threats and automatic firearms without the need to interrupt the crowd flow. HSR™ is not screening for small threat items that may pose a threat to the safety of an aircraft in flight, which is the purpose of pre-departures screening, but is protecting people in landside areas from terrorist attack. It is another layer of airport security and offers a solution to mitigating the risk of terrorism in arrival and departure halls where a capability gap currently exists.

Challenge

Stadiums, as large gathering places, present a complex array of security challenges. These challenges stem from the sheer volume of people, the emotional intensity of events, and the potential for malicious intent. In addition to screening for metallic and non-metallic threat items, deterring pyrotechnics being taken into a stadium is a source of real concern. Balancing the need to screen thoroughly for a range of threat materials with the need to maintain efficient entry flow and provide a good visitor experience is a major challenge.

Solution

Apstec’s next-generation screening technology, Human Security Scanner (HSS) Falcon provides a fast, non-invasive security experience while at the same time screening for a wide range of threats. The comprehensive, smart solution uniquely detects explosives and weapons on people and in bags. It also detects pyrotechnics carried on the body under clothing. Highly mobile, HSS is designed for rapid installation, relocation or removal and can be installed indoors or in the open air independent of infrastructure. The system’s ability to quickly non-invasively screen large numbers of people for multiple threats and substances enables stadiums to streamline their security technology deployments, providing a high-level of assurance as well as first-rate arrival experience.

Challenge

Detecting narcotics concealed on the body under clothing is incredibly challenging. Technology has struggled to deliver effective solutions, and large-scale manual operations are intrusive, costly, and generally impractical. Authorities are looking for technologies capable of screening large numbers of people non-invasively for narcotics and other items of concern.

Solution

Apstec’s next-generation solution, HSS Falcon, non-invasively screens the full height of the person for concealments on the body, as well as their body-worn and hand-carried bags. HSS Falcon delivers a safe, unobtrusive screening operation that respects the right to privacy and improves the border-crossing experience for either departing or arriving passengers. Because of its high mobility and small footprint, it is also installed very quickly, offering a high degree of operational agility. The technology was selected as the sole equipment to be funded by the EU, via the Pan European Network of Customs Practitioners, to be developed specifically to deliver 'Fast non-intrusive screening of passengers to detect and deter body-worn drugs'. The project is complete and the resulting HSS Falcon solution delivers a powerful capability that complements existing Customs efforts to increase the effectiveness of operations in a proportionate, pragmatic, and affordable way.

Challenge

Effective security screening measures on cruise ships and within port facilities are essential for ensuring the safety and well-being of passengers, crew, and the vessels themselves. Robust maritime security screening measures act as a crucial deterrent against terrorism, the smuggling of illegal substances and weapons, and other potential criminal activities. However, traditional aviation security screening approaches are invasive, time-consuming, and don’t provide a screening operation in keeping with a premium cruise experience.

Solution

Apstec’s next-generation technology HSS Falcon provides security fit for a premium cruise experience. HSS Falcon is a comprehensive smart scanning solution that delivers consistently high levels of security combined with superior passenger experience. The high-throughput walkthrough portal is designed to quickly and non-invasively screen passengers for a wide range of threats to passengers or the safety of the cruise liner, enabling faster embarkation while delivering superior passenger experience. HSS Falcon detects both metallic and non-metallic threats carried on the body under clothing, in body-worn and hand-carried bags, thereby mitigating several serious risks not addressed by metal detectors. HSS Falcon significantly improves the passenger experience, getting them on board as quickly and efficiently as possible. Passengers do not need to prepare for screening; they simply walk through the portal at normal walking speed and the system does the rest. No more lines, no need to inconvenience passengers by asking them to divest or submit their hand baggage for x-ray. HSS Falcon offers a better option for security screening and a brighter future for the cruise liner industry.

Challenge

In an era where security incidents in public places are a growing concern, exhibition, conference, and trade fair organizers are increasingly looking to adopt innovative solutions to ensure the safety of their visitors and exhibitors while at the same time providing a smooth and speedy entry experience to the venue. Such locations are dynamic environments that draw thousands of visitors, and while events present opportunities for networking, education, and business growth, they also come with significant security challenges. Managing large crowds, ensuring safety, and screening visitors and staff for weapons or explosives efficiently without hindering attendee flow is crucial due to safety and terrorism concerns. Solutions to these security challenges require sophisticated, proactive approaches.

Solution

Apstec meets these challenges with our portfolio of solutions, including Human Security Radar® (HSR™) and HSS Falcon, both of which have been proven with customers in the sector. HSR enables screening of multiple people simultaneously, providing the highest possible throughput. HSS Falcon a highly mobile solution, provides a non-invasive screening experience capable of screening people and their bags, thus supporting a wide range of operational scenarios, including outdoor deployments. APSTEC Systems' screening technologies offer a groundbreaking approach to security screening and crowd management, combining advanced technology with real-time data to create safer, more efficient event environments.

Challenge

Guests at high-end hotels, expect a premium hotel experience, seamless luxury, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere—all while feeling safe and secure. However, hotels can be high-profile targets for criminals and terrorists due to their public accessibility and large number of visitors. Hotel security managers need to strike the right balance in implementing robust yet proportionate security measures that fit in with luxurious settings to discreetly screen guests and their belongings ensuring they enhance rather than disrupt the guest experience.

Solution

HSR and HSS Falcon are the future of hotel security as they provide a high-throughput, non-invasive and discreet screening operation that screens for a wide range of threats while reducing the need for high-touch physical searches, ensuring guest comfort and privacy. They are ideal for hotel lobbies, restaurants, conference centres, and entrance areas or anywhere where there is a desire to screens individuals without requiring them to stop, open bags, or remove belongings. These solutions deliver an unobtrusive yet effective screening operation that blends safety with a comfortable, welcoming guest experience.

Challenge

Tourist attractions and landmark buildings present a unique set of security challenges. Because of their accessibility and symbolic value, such sites are often considered “soft targets” and potentially attractive targets for terrorist attacks. The concentration of large numbers of people creates opportunities for mass casualty attacks and the iconic nature of the location can attract significant media attention potentially creating a broader psychological impact. Many attractions cover extensive areas, making comprehensive security surveillance and access control difficult. These challenges are compounded by concerns that invasive security measures can detract from the visitor experience and may be complex and costly to operate.

Solution

Apstec’s suite of innovative screening technology provides high-throughput, non-invasive screening solutions to detect a wide range of threats to the safety of visitors and to the contents of the buildings and structures themselves. Apstec’s technology detects metallic and non-metallic threats on the body and in body-worn / hand-carried bags, thereby mitigating several serious risks not addressed by metal detectors and weapon detection systems. (Simplifying search operations} Apstec’s technology detects a wide range of threats, including explosive threats and firearms, carried on the body or in body-worn / hand-carried bags , thereby mitigating serious risks not addressed by metal detectors and simplifying search operations by potentially reducing the need for multiple systems to screen both people and their belongings.
